How Americans Spend Their Money, By Generation

Which generation spends the most? What do they spend it on? Boomers, Generation X, Gen Z, Millenials? The average American in 2021 spent just over $60,000, but how is that money spent? How does it compare by generation?

The chart above, by Preethi Lodha, shares the expenditures of 5 generations of Americans:

  • Silent (Pre 1945)
  • Baby Boomers (1946-1964)
  • Generation X (1965-1980)
  • Millennials (1981-1996)
  • Generation Z (1997 or Later)

Consumer Expenditures show you how much Americans spend on things. Most consumer spending falls into the larger categories of food, housing, transportation, healthcare, and other goods/services.
